If you have ever seen the small valve at the back of the washing machine, which extends from the wall and is connected to a water pipe, that is a tee valve. Most people don't think of it until there is a problem - such as a burst pipe, or when you need to move the washing machine but don't know how to turn off the water. But this small hardware piece actually performs a very important function.

It controls the water supply of the machine.

The tee valve is located between your home's water pipe and the washing machine's water inlet hose, allowing you to directly control the water flow at the water source. Without it, every time you need to clean, move, or replace the washing machine, you have to shut off the main water supply of the entire house, which is very troublesome.

It serves as an emergency shut-off

The water pipes of the washing machine are more prone to problems than you might think. Cheap rubber hoses may crack or burst after a few years. If the water is still flowing, it means a major flood. The tee valve allows you to cut off the water source in just a few seconds, so plumbers recommend turning it off during vacations. Just two seconds, and you can avoid finding your floor soaked when you get home.

What to pay attention to when replacing

Most washing machines have a tee valve with a 1/2-inch inlet port that can be screwed into the wall pipe, and a 3/4-inch outlet port that connects to the machine hose. But before purchasing, be sure to check your existing installation. It is recommended to choose brass rather than zinc alloy. Brass is more durable and won't wear out after multiple uses. The quarter-turn ball valve is easier to operate than the old multi-turn type, and you can tell at a glance whether the valve is open or closed.

A common mistake to avoid

People often tighten the connection too tightly, thinking that the tighter it is, the safer it is. But that's not the case. Using too much force may cause the seal to break or the threads to loosen, which can actually lead to leakage. Use thread sealant tape, tighten manually, and then screw it back another quarter turn with a wrench. That's enough. If there is dripping or leaking, just tighten it a little more - do not over-tighten.
